In 1832, Aristide Barbier and Édouard Daubrée founded a factory for rubber products in Clermont-Ferrand. This was purchased by Édouard Michelin in 1889 and renamed "Michelin et Cie". After a few years of development and innovation, Michelin equipped its first car (L’Eclair) in the Paris-Bordeaux race in 1895. Three years later, the famous Michelin Man, also known as Bibendum, was invented. Alongside its achievements in tire production, Michelin diversified by launching its first Michelin Guide (Red Guide) in 1900, its first road map in 1910, and by building the world's first paved airplane runway in 1916. In 1937, Michelin launched its first truck tire with a steel casing on the market. In 1946, the company filed the patent for the first radial tire. This invention revolutionized the tire industry. In 1965, Michelin's first research center was opened in France. Two more followed worldwide in 1977. In 1979, Michelin became Formula 1 World Champion with its radial tires on a Ferrari. The successful Energy range, known today especially for its durability and fuel savings, was invented in 1992 with the Energy tire. Michelin has developed strongly worldwide across all its business branches (tires, travel guides, road maps). Thanks to its continuous innovations, Michelin consistently succeeds in manufacturing tires with the best test results.
